TO THE CORNER AND BACK...White Cliffs to Yanda

After regrouping we headed further east through the Paroo Darling basin towards the Darling River. Pretty amazing country out here, and we could tell just why this area is also shut when it floods as the roads pass across low level areas for where the water sits. We soon hit Tilpa- a very small community and very historic settlement on the banks of the Darling River. The pub sits high on the western side of the river. It is hard to believe that paddle steamers used to come this far up the river. But if you checkout some of the old pics in the pub ( while having a beer of course ) you will be amazed at some of these pics. After lunch we crossed the bridge to the eastern side of the river and headed north. Roads were a bit dusty due to the lack of rain- but that's the outback.  An hour up the road we soon rocked into Louth, another historic settlement where the paddle steamers stopped and also part of the Cobb and co stagecoach run.

This pub has had a makeover the past year and looks great- green grass out the back, shade under the local river gums and bloody cold beer too. After relaxing here for an hour divulging in some hot chips we decided to head further north for 60km towards Bourke. Our camp for the night would be a newly opened camp area right on the banks of the Darling River called Yanda Station. A very small sign pointed us to the camp, some 1 km off the main road. This was nice….. pit toilets, plenty of firewood, a short stroll to the river- it was bliss.

We were originally going to camp at nearby Gundabooka another NPWS spot, but were told about this very new one- pleased we did as it was beautiful. We had galahs in the trees, there were pelicans on the river as well as a few emus walking on the outskirts of the camp. Sunset was spot on down beside the river, and even though it was low the water still was moving at walking pace. We did actually spot several wild pigs drinking some 100 metres away down beside the water. Minimal flies, beautiful night and another great spot- I will def be coming back here !!
